Social networking made a bit easier…

Posted on June 29th, 2008 in tech | No Comments »

So I’ve been looking to make my blogging/facebook/plaxo/linked-in/twitter/ life a bit easier and I think I’ve found a wonderful help. It’s called ping.fm.

Ping.fm is a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap.

Now don’t get me wrong, this may not be the solution to keep all of your statuses and blogs synced, but it may help.

So if you haven’t found the time to go to every social network account and update them all, this may be the solution your looking for. BTW - you’ll have to hunt a bit for a invite code, but don’t worry it only took me a few minutes with Mr. google… don’t ask why I think he is a mr.

Wordpress + Facebook = Wordbook

Posted on June 28th, 2008 in tech | No Comments »

This is a web/tech post about some of my favorite web apps and how to combine the two great tastes that taste great together… I mean two great apps that work great together.

I’ve been following Wordpress since version 1.2 or something and it has really taken off in the last year or so. The blog thing has never really caught on for me, but recently I’ve given it another shot. The other ‘great taste’ is Facebook. So many times it feels like a high school contest to see who can get more friends and other times I think it’s pure genius. I mean how much information have you released to advertisers via facebook. Think about that from an advertiser’s perspective… A new friend of mine informed me about spending less than the price of a good dinner to acquire ‘enough’ work for the summer to keep him busy. All because he was able to target his exact customer. Anyway I think it’s genius.

Back to the main topic. For me I have this blog and a facebook account and would like to keep the two in sync. (I’ll avoid any reference to the band N*Sync.. oh wait… dang it.) This little plug-in can feed your wordpress posts directly to your facebook news feed. Here’s how to do it:

  1. First, this requires that you have your own domain name and hosting. For less than the amount of a decent lunch per month you can have your own hosting for your very own website. BTW - I can help if you want to get that set up, just let me know.
  2. Download an install this nice plug-in called Wordbook.
  3. Upon activation, the plugin will walk you through adding the Facebook Wordbook app.
  4. Blog away! Now your blog will publish updates to your Profile Mini-Feed and your friends’ News Feeds.

If you want help with any of this please let me know.

Principles of Design

Posted on June 26th, 2008 in design, theory | No Comments »

So this has been an interesting topic for me since art school. Design and all art for that matter follow certain principles or sometimes even guidelines. Of course toward the extremes the rules quickly fade. The interesting thing for me about all of these ideas is how it can be used in almost every area of life. As we create in business design or in our family, certain patterns and principles can help us achieve a more successful out come.

One book that brings many disciplines under this common theme is Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, and Jill Butler. This book is a wonderful resource to many patterns and best practices across a variety of disciplines. Organized alphabetically it is very useful for quick reference.

If I were a graduate student, this topic would certainly be at the top of my list to research. Many times the world seems so random and out of order. While this may appear on the surface as chaotic many laws are governing our world. Perhaps a small number of governing principles could be presented as having the biggest impact on success or failure in our creations.

I recently found a model for designing a logo or identity for a business. At the top it presented 4 influencing topics; client input, design trends, research/concept, and color theory. Below those topics is depicted a funnel that gradually gets more narrow toward the bottom. This implies that the information is filtered and focused on a single most important artifact the logo. The author of this document also describes various stages in the development. This certainly is one method of development of an idea or in this case a logo. While this may seem obvious to some, for me this process is fascinating mainly because I don’t follow it and often times have trouble along the way. This might be said of many of our efforts, but those who know these ’secrets’ have great power to achieve and create success.

Your thoughts are always appreciated.

Personal Power Plant

I found this interesting…

Can you imagine if instead of whining about how much power costs we could make our own. Well we can! This is just a small example but it works.

HYmini is handheld device to capture the power of the wind for small 5v devices like your iPod, phone, and camera. I was very interested to learn the various wind speeds around the country.

From there web site:

HYmini is a handheld, universal charger/adapter device that harnesses renewable wind power / solar power and conventional wall plug power to recharge almost all your 5V digital gadgets.

It could be attached to your bike or even car window for that matter. Anyway, just thought it was a cool way to ease some costs.. even if it is just batteries. Check it out and see the their cool solar capture devices.

Firefox 3 Download Day

Posted on June 17th, 2008 in tech | No Comments »

So for all the geeks and such out there, this one’s for you.

Today is the official download day for the latest release of the Firefox browser application. You might be thinking “What is a ‘download day’?”… Glad you asked. The peeps at Mozilla (the makers of Firefox) want to set an official Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. Now you might be asking “Why?” Well, that is a good question. I believe these guys and gals are serious enough to make a bona-fide world record, and marketing. Yeah, I could go on about the benefits of a browser that has brought innovation and better security to the web, but that might not hit home with most. I mean some might rather just go on thinking that the little blue ‘e’ on there pc desktop is the ‘internet.’ That’s ok, I understand. So the story is these guys just want attention and free marketing.

So if you are not doing anything with your bandwidth today, run over to Firefox and download a great web browser and help save the planet… uh.. I mean help set a Guinness World Record. Really how many times have you helped do that in your life? I thought so.
